Code: TTSA/22/0125 Curriculum Development & Design : Principles & Practice *

“A collection of learning materials is no more a curriculum than a pile of bricks is a house. What our students need are carefully organized, sequential, structured introductions to school subjects.” Dylan Wiliam

As Christine Counsell notes, improving curriculum development and design can be a “fiendishly complex” process. This session is designed to assist leaders in their efforts to develop clear, cohesive, relevant, knowledge-rich curricula that meet the unique needs and interests of their pupils and prepare them superbly for the next stage of their education and beyond.

Drawing on the wisdom of Dylan Wiliam, Clare Sealy, Christine Counsell, Mary Myatt and others, as well as his own experiences, Andy will help delegates to clarify their vision of a successful curriculum for their school and reflect on how they can go about the process of implementing change over time.

Throughout the session delegates will reflect on the following questions:

* What is a curriculum… and what is not?

* To what extent and in what ways are curriculum, pedagogy and assessment linked?

* Why is having a rationale for your curriculum so important?

* How can we sequence learning to make it easier for pupils to commit to long-term memory?

* How can we build in cohesion and connectivity to help pupils make and explore meaningful links?

* How can audience and purpose, authenticity and relevance be exploited to increase challenge?

* Why and how do we need to induct pupils into the various subject disciplines: thinking like a scientist etc?

* Above all, how can we ensure that challenge becomes the norm given that Learning happens when children think hard?
