Session 2 of the Mathematical Big Ideas twilight workshops

The big ideas of fractions – from the beginning

Full of useful images/representations and teaching ideas to take away with you, this twilight workshop will use the NCETM’s ‘Five Big Ideas to Develop Mastery’ to develop understanding of introducing fractions and how this progresses through the primary age range:

-          The whole and the part

-          Equal parts

-          Unit fractions and non-unit fractions

-          Effective use of manipulatives

-          Fractions of amounts

-          Deeper thinking

-          Comparing fractions

-          Mixed numbers

About the Trainer

Since 2019, Chris hHallett has been Assistant Headteacher at Cockington Primary School; taking responsibility for Standards and Progress, Assessment and Maths teaching and learning. In addition to his role as Assistant Headteacher, Chris works as an SLE in maths. In this capacity Chris leads twilight workshops supporting teachers and Early Careers Teachers with their maths.

In addition to his leadership role in school, Chris has completed the NPQSL programme and the MaST (Mathematics Specialist Teacher) course.

Chris wants to build on his leadership skills and improve key aspects of his personal and professional practice in order to develop effective leadership in others around him.
