Event description
2:30-2:35pm: Welcome and Digital Housekeeping

Welcome from Rebecca Bailey one of the SWIFT Secondary History Professional Community Leads. Audio and Visual checks. Please say “hello” and give your school’s name in the chat box.

2:35-3:35pm: Engaging with Local Heritage | Michael Gorely | Local Heritage Education Manager (SW), Historic England

Michael will explore accessible ways for students to engage with their local heritage using a range of resources and starting points such as maps, aerial photographs and census returns. He will look at how you can make your students the centre of a local History enquiry.

3:40-4:20pm: Weaving local History into Units of Study | Becky Bailey | Education South West

Becky will share how she has woven local History into the ESW KS3 Units of study to make the curriculum more representative and relevant to students. This will include looking at the new ‘Migration through time’ year 7 unit which focuses on migration to Devon and the ‘Meanwhile in Devon’ sheets that her department have created which allow students to delve into local History whilst studying key events.

Breakout rooms will be used for staff in similar localities to share ideas for their own local area and discuss how some of the case studies might be applied to their own curricula.

4:20-4:30pm: Topics and Shared Effective Practice for the Professional Community | Chris Trengove | Sidmouth College

Delegates will be placed in breakout rooms during this final session to discuss support, CPD ideas, guest speakers and shared practice for the network in the coming year.
